I met Sam when he was a college student at Catholic in Washington and came to live in the house of the Agrupacion Catolica Universitaria. We became good friends and I was impressed with his nice personality, his caring attitude towards others, and his interest in other cultures. His language skills were amazing and he quickly learned Spanish and French (to court his future wife!) He used these skills very successfully in his career at the State Deparment. He would periodically come back to DC between assignments or for visits and he would talk to his friends about his diplomatic work and about his participation in church work on behalf of the poor in the countries where he was assigned. He was an example of a true Christian deeply committed to work on behalf of the common good and the poorest of the poor. I will miss him dearly. Lorenzo L. Perez
